Tule Review Seeks Poetry Submissions

The Sacramento Poetry Center welcomes submissions for the next Tule Review — now 40-50 pages and perfect bound — with an anticipated publication date in June 2010.  We consider poetry of all styles and forms (except Haiku).

Submission Guidelines:

• Considers poetry of all styles and forms (except Haiku).
• Send up to six poems, maximum 96 lines per poem.
• Submission deadline for the June 2010 issue is Feb. 27, 2010; submissions received after that date may be considered for a future issue. 
• Include name, street and e-mail addresses on each page of submission.
• Provide a short bio, not to exceed five lines.
• We prefer submission via email with poems attached in a single MSWord document (.doc or .docx format).
• E-mail submissions to tulereview@sacramentopoetrycenter.org   Please specify "Tule Submission" in the subject line.
• Hard copy submissions are also accepted. Mail those to:

Guideposts Seeks Contributions for Upcoming Book Series on Prayer

Guideposts is seeking contributors for a new twelve-book series: The Incredible Power of Prayer.

They need submissions for the first three volumes, Praying from the Heart, The Healing Touch, and Expecting Miracles. Submission deadline is June 15^th for these three titles.

URGENT CALL FOR True Dog Stories

PROJECT: First person, true stories about dogs interacting with humans in meaningful ways. 

 THEMES:  Animals were created for a reason. 

What specific purpose has a dog had in your life or in the lives of others you know, whether obvious or not so obvious?  Do you have stories of these marvelous creatures somehow being in the right place at the right time to give comfort or aid to humans – or to each other? Do you have rescue stories regarding a dog?  Does your dog sometimes seem like a messenger? Does the presence of a dog in your life help you know there is a Creator who cares about you or someone else you know?  Did a dog enter your life for a brief time, and then leave when its purpose was apparently fulfilled? Anything well-crafted and compelling, from the mundane to the miraculous, that shows some sense of "why" this beast was created and allowed to enter your world will be considered.  I want only adult writers and only true stories, so no fiction and no poems.

 STYLE:  This publisher publishes books from a Judeo-Christian perspective, so please avoid writing that is New Age or otherwise too mystical. Also avoid rampant Christian-ese.  Use the examples of James Herriot's writing, Guideposts stories, PAX TV's "Miracle Pets," Chicken Soup stories, and of course the previous Callie Smith Grant animal books.  Keep in mind that while Revell's primary audience is a Christian one, their books also sell well in general bookstores and bookstore chains, so while some faith content is fine if you care to use it, do keep things as universal as you can.

 A WORD OF WARNING:   Of the many submissions I received for the previous books, too many did not follow theme. Too many were mini-sermons or devotional readings, which are not what I'm looking for. Also, while it's fine to learn something from your dog, do not over-spiritualize the creature; let your dog remain a dog. And finally, please, no prolonged pet illness and death scenes.  

 EXTRA THOUGHTS:  Think about the beauty or maybe even the miracle of this dog being in your life at the right time. 

 LENGTH:  Use the space you need to tell the story. 

RIGHTS:  Non-exclusive, worldwide volume rights in all languages.  In other words, you can sell this story again. I'll consider previously published work if you have the rights and if it has not been published since 2006.

 PAYMENT:  $100 per story plus two copies of the book. You also will be able to purchase more copies at 50% of retail price.

DEADLINE:   May 1, 2009.

Call for writers!

Feminists for Life is seeking volunteer writers for an upcoming issue of The American Feminist,® FFL's magazine. The issue will focus on raising kids cheap and will explore topics such as affordable prenatal care, childcare choices, food and nutrition, budget-friendly clothing and entertainment and economical education and healthcare options.

This issue of The American Feminist will be the second on the theme of "Raising Kids Cheap." The Fall 2001 issue has been a useful tool for parents, pregnancy care centers, college and university students, pregnancy resource forums, and many others.

If you have expertise or experience in one of these areas, please indicate this in your response.

Writers must be thorough, detail-oriented and share FFL's commitment to women and children. Previous publication is helpful but not required. Ability to meet deadlines is essential. Writers should submit a writing sample by February 4 to: writer@feministsforlife.org. Please include your name, phone number, email address, and address.

 

This is a great opportunity with a very quick deadline. I hope our group will submit a few items.

Your story will be copyrighted in your name and you will retain your rights to resell the story to another publication after it is published by Chicken Soup.
